Hey guys, JakeSayin here. A few months ago my Great-Uncle Harry died. He was an old Latvian Jew who a violenist who became the owner of a little store after he married my Great-Aunt Rebecca (we call her Aunt Ree). A few weeks after he died, suddenly we got this box in the mail from my Aunt Ree. I opened it and found a calculator, and thought it was just a nice gift, but when I took the calculator out, I found a wad of paper money in a rubber band. As I unrolled it I realized something. This was no ordinary money. In it were a bunch of bills in Russian and German writing. As I inspected them, I realized that the Russian money was all from 1917(when the Czar was still in power)!! The Russian money was all 250 Ruble (I hope I spelled that right) notes, except for one very large 1000 ruble note! The German money was even older. The newest was from 1918, and the oldest was from 1910. The rest were from 1914. The funny thing is, there was one final note, a 5 Frank not from French Algeria, from 1941 (how that got there I have no idea). Now, when we asked my Aunt Ree the story on the money, we were given an interesting story. My Great-Uncle Harry was born in Latvia in 1905, and his family moved to America in 1908. For whatever reason, they went back to Latvia for a little bit in 1912, and got stuck there during WWI, not returning to America until 1920. When they came back, they brought with them what money they had, which is what I hold in my hands as I write this (except for the French Algerian bill, I have no idea what that is). I was wondering if anyone knew anything at least about the German money. Here is a description of all the bills I have (excluding the French Algerian bill)
9x 250 ruble notes from 1917 (they have Czarist eagles on them, and for some strange reason, there are Swasticas behind the eagles)
1x 1000 ruble note from 1917 (is bigger than the other Russian money, and has what is probably the Czar's palace on the front)
1x 1 Reichmark note from August 1914 (has Kaiser eagle on front, it says this on the back of this note:
Darlehenskassenschein
Eine Mark
Berlin, den. 12. August 1914
Reichsschuldenverwaltung (this one is a little fuzzy on all of them, so I think this is what says)
(then there are some signatures that I can't make out)
(finally, there is this long paragraph):
Wer Darlebenstaffenfcheine nachmacht oder verfälfcht oder nachgemachte oder verfälfchte sich verfchafft und in Derfehr bringt, wird mit Suchthaus nicht unter swei Jabren Beftraft.
8x 5 reichmark notes from August 1914 (on the front are two women one each side of the note facing each other. They are both identical. In between them is what looks like a crown. Underneath it are two objects crossing each other. The one on the 1st looks like some sort of staff with an each on top. The eagle has an axe in its left talon and a sword in its right talon. The object on the right is a sword. Both of these objects have cloth around them. On the back it says this:
Darlehenskassenschein
Fünf Mark
Berlin, den. 5.
1x 20 Reichmark note from Febuary 1918 (this is a weird one. It has all sorts of symbolic things all over it. I will do my best to describe it. On the front, it has the Kaiser Eagle at the top middle. To the left is a knight in armor from the late Middle ages, maybe even the 1600's. At the right is a woman in a dress, that has lots of bird feathers coming out of it, a bunch of what look like peacock feathers, and then a long one. On the back are two Greek God's heads (they look like Hermes) facing each other. There are also two eagles with a king's crown on one and a queen's crown on the other, with "Reichsfchuldenvermaltung" circling them. It also says this:
Darlehnsrassenschein
Swansig Mark
Berlin, den. 20. Februar 1918
1x 50 reichmark note August 1914 (on the front is "Darlehenskaffenfchein" with "Funfsig Mark" under it. The words "Funfsig Mark" are on top of two women that are facing each other. They both have crowns on top of olive leaf crowns, and they are both holding scepters with an eagle on the top. On the back are some royal symbols, and two kaiser eagles with the word "REICHSSCHULDENVERWALTUNG the following words:
Darlehenskassenschein
Eine Mark
Berlin, den 5.
1x 100 Reichsbanknote from April 1910 (this is one of the best German bills I have, tied only with the 20 reichmark note. It is a bank note, and is in excellent condition. On the side is a white rectangle, which when held up to the sun shows a picture of an old man, probably Kaiser Wilhelm II, kind of like the American 20 dollar bills of the present. On the front is a beautiful picture. It basically is a woman holding a sword in one hand and a shield with an eagle on it. She is wearing a crown on top of an olive branch crown. To her left are tools, like an advanced plow, tools to make weapons and armor, a gear, and a weird staff that is a pole with two snakes wrapped around it, with an orb with eagle wings under it at the top. A tree is above all of this. Two the side is the ocean with early 1900's-era battleships. In the middle of all of this are the words "Ein Bundert Mark." On the back are the heads of two Greek gods. On the left is a man with a helmet with wings on it (probably Hermes) and the one on the right is a woman with wheat in her hair. To the sides there are two eagles, with the word "REICHSBANKDIREKTORIUM" circling them. There are these words on top of a royal symbol:
Reichsbanknote
April, 1910
Reichsbankdirectorium
(then there are some signatures that I can't make out)
(finally, there is this long paragraph):
Wer Banknoten nachmacht oder verfälfcht oder nachgemachte oder verfälfchte sich verfchafft und in Derfehr bringt, wird mit Suchthaus nicht unter swei Jabren Beftraft.
Damn!! That took forever to do. All of the writing was in deutsche Schrift, so it took me forever to translate the letters into regular letters. Hope you guys can help. I will try to scan some pics of them soon.

Perhaps we can help you out... the German script from these times is sometimes difficult to read for foreigners. But I didn't know there were 1-Mark-bills back then... I heard that in Imperial Germany, there were golden 10-Mark-pieces. I'd like that to be introduced for the €uro zone as well - golden 10 €-pieces, yummy!
I'll rectify the text on the 1 Mark-bill and try to translate it.
"Wer Darlehenskassenscheine nachmacht oder verfälscht oder nachgemachte oder verfälschte sich verschafft und in Verkehr bringt, wird mit Zuchthaus nicht unter zwei Jahren bestraft", meaning "Everyone copying or faking money bills or aquiring or circulating them is punished with jail not under two years". This is actually a slightly altered version of § 148 Strafgesetzbuch (Penal law book) of that time.

Yo thanks JP. I will try to get some pics of these bills, since some of them are just beautiful. My scanner isn't plugged in, and I am not the best at using it, but I will do my best. If anything, maybe I can take some digital pictures of them.
Oh, by the way, I am just curious. How do you upload images onto the site? I know how to host pics and then just give make an image codelink, but I have seen people actually attach the pics to their posts. How do you do that?

Watch out: In old german letters there were two different "s", one of them looking like an "f"!
The correct Text in modern letters would be: "Wer Darlehensscheine nachmacht oder verfälscht oder nachgemachte oder verfälschte sich verschafft und in Verkehr bringt, wird mit Zuchthaus nicht unter zwei Jahren bestraft."
I tried to translate it for you:
Loan bank bill
One Mark
Berlin, 12th August 1914
Imperial administration of debts
