you guys piss and moan about how american made movies are usually based around americans. The nerve of them!!!
yes i think someone should make more movies about other countries armies during ww1 and ww2, but you have to remeber they are trying to make money, not trying to appease europeans who already have a bad view of america, and will still have one even if a steller movie about france's involvment in ww1 is made. Besides most americans (not including myself) couldnt give two craps about what america did in ww1 let alone what some other country did. I too am bored with movies based around american troops, id like to see a decent movie about czechs, but it aint gonna happen, at least not from an american based production company. Other countries can make movies too, america doesnt have a monopoly on film making equipment. Im not trying to start a fight here, so dont take me for being an arrogant prick, im just trying to state the facts.

To come back to the topic:

The problem is that theres a good reason why the Wehrmacht is in that bad light. Even in germany your twisted between the feeling that they were War-Criminals and on the other side our ancestors and grand fathers that fought for our country. Well it´s a difficult topic... |
That's the "core" of the problem: The wehrmacht didn't stay neutral (politicaly) - at least some wehrmacht soldiers became war criminals by executing civilians, burning down villages and helping the ss to round up Jews, gypsies and other people whom Hitler wanted to be annihilated.
That's a non deniable fact.
We germans had to learn this - it was an aching lection. We learned it - with massive "help" by the allies, by name the americans - so "good", that many of us are going to condemn the wehrmacht completly.
This reaction is understandable, but what these people - germans but also former allies, once again by name americans - are going to forget is that the simple german soldier of ww2 - unlike the soldiers serving in the armies of democratic states like americans, brits, etc. - mostly had not the choice to disobey.
The choice of soldiers who were assigned to such "missions" was in most cases either doing what was ordered to them or to be shoot according to martial law.
I can not tell for sure what i had done if my only choice would have been "me or them" - i really can't.
There might of course been some soldiers would had volunteered for this execution / deporting missions or even some individuals who had done such things with pleasure - such insane persons could be found in every army, also in the us or the british or french or russian army.
The problem is that Hitlers insane ideas and orders made a number of such persons in germany an in the wehrmacht step out of the (hope these are the right words) lowland of human existence and act out their inhuman sprouts - those people, who might have been condemned and punished in other armies / countries, were, in other words, encouraged by Hitler / the government to do so.
As our foreign friends can see, the affair between us (germans) and our past is very difficult - and makes it impossible for us to glorify our armies (even those of WW1, which had nothing to do with Hitler an the third Reich) the way the americans do.
But this does not mean that the picture of the german soldier of WW2, which was and is still "painted" by movies and so on and shows all of these soldiers as brutal, brainless, merciless nazis, murderers, rapers etc. can be acceptable for us.
It should be as different as it was in reality - we should not accept that a few criminals in uniform dishonor every single german soldier of WW2, and so shouldn't the americans, brits, french, russians.
P.S.: Please excuse the sometimes strange terms. I had to consult my dictionary often to wrote this down.
Unfortunately, i must say that my english has become a bit rusty.

Here is a question that I am interested in,
Does the German population (or you and other forumers) think that since the Germans & Austrians lost WW1 that they were automatically the bad guys?
I am not sure of this question nor am I trying to prove any point, I am just curious how the current German Populace thinks of the Germans role in WW1.

Your right but on the other hand, hollywood movies also earn a lot of money with the european people who look their movies. In Germany it´s normal to watch the typical us movies about the us army not your own historical movies about the german army. And besides... it´s rather dangerous in germany to bring an ww2 movie out (especially when the germans aren´t the bloodlusty monsters) because you might be a sympathisant of the extreme right wing politcans. The anger about the nazis is that high that we aren´t possible to have a clear and objective view about our own past (which doesn´t should mean we are less guilty). Last example for this is a movie called "Der Untergang" or in translation "The Downfall" (if i translated right ) which has to do with the last hours of Hitlers life in his bunker in Berlin and the invading russian army. On the other hand the german movie´s are quite.... experimental of its quality (good movies are mostly B-Movies), so if you want to make a movie that even can tell the guys outside of germany (maybe in the usa) that we weren´t that evil or aren´t that bad today you can´t make it in german filmstudios. Í don´t remember any movie that has made it up to america.. instead of german music like rammstein which strenghten the feeling that germans may be as hard or wierd as many may expect. The problem with entertainment is, that the one´s who wan´t to be entertained don´t want to change their sight about something because it´s easier and more exiting.
| Zitat: | | Does the German population (or you and other forumers) think that since the Germans & Austrians lost WW1 that they were automatically the bad guys? |
In my opinion it is as you expected. Some think that we where even the bad guys since we started ww1 and even more think that we´ve become the bad guys since we´ve started ww2. The time between this dates are normally forgotten by a lot of people.
I cannot speak for the austrians but with my experiences, the austrian don´t feel like the bad guys. If you think about Nazi´s or WorldWars it´s mostly Germany that comes to your mind first.. and after a long time austria (even if Hitler was austrian).
@ Asperagus: But don´t forget the "Verbrechen der Wehrmacht Austellung" which wanted to show us, that even the whole Wehrmacht a big mob of criminals was.

I think you’re not 100% right about German soldiers, being shown as evil in all the American movies. The best example I can bring to mind at the moment is from the film “The Pianist”, where a German officer saves a Jewish refugee. Also, in Band of Brothers the Germans don’t seem that bad for the most part. Maybe the problem is that the German are played by Americans, who imagine the Germans soldiers as evil, brutal, barbaric etc.

there's a couple more film's i can think of such as Cross of iron(ww2)
all quiet on the western front(ww1)
the one that got away (p.o.w film)
but on the whole i believe the normal german soldier was just trying to stay alive just like everyone else.

I’ve just watched this French WW I-themed movie (Un Long Dimanche F…something) and I’m quite disappointed. The movie seems to focus more on prostitution during the war than the fighting itself. I hoped it’d be something close to Saving Private Ryan but it was completely different.

Damn. And I was expecting so much of it. Guess we still have Company K and Gallipoli.

Gallipoli : Total dissapointment.. I was expecting it to be a war film like Saving Private Ryan, since in the trailer it was showing the soldiers in combat , but NO. It was just Telling about what happened in the trenches. I don't konw but it was a big dissapointment.. The tra,ler was far better then the movie(?) itself..

It's very sad to hear that Gallipoli was a disappointment
A friend of mine just found an interesting article - an interview with Peter Jackson from before he was done with LOTR.
http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStri.../articles5.html
"Then someone asked him to do film in New Zealand featuring World War 1 aeroplanes, one of his passions.
And that's what he would have been doing if The Lord of the Rings deal had not been clinched at roughly the same time."
OMG! Please, Peter Jackson! Make that movie as soon as you're done with King Kong!

Let’s hope that the Americans won’t disappoint us with Company K, though I have some doubts about it. Does anyone know when the movie will be released?

I have seen the movie. It hasn't been released yet, but its on its way.
To all you who fear that it is a super pro-american movie can rest easy. I suggest you read the book. It is an anti war-movie that isn't bombastic or anything like that. It's quite poetic and philosophical. It is absolutely worth seeing, but it's quite "small scale" and the low budget is evident. Someone should give the director more money
