I've seen color photographs from WW1 before, but not like these... It feels very strong. Almost surreal...

I've seen those before, indeed they are marvelous images. I especially liked that French railway gun picture the most, and those no-man's-land shots are also great.

Looks like one of the BF1918 houses

technically speaking, the pictures have strong indices of modern digital colorization. it is true that the three layered color film was invented at the time, the quality was poor enough to give such sharp images (otherwise we would have many many more examples of them today!) the quality of the image depended not on the quality of the lens (which was already very sharp) but the resolution of the color film (which was drastically low). a color shot at this optical resolution, means that the two should be in a perfect state. that i am not sure of.
it reminds me rather the colorization technique, which has been in use since maybe 30 years, before it was chemical, now purely digital, and very easy to do even with photoshop.
that is my first hand impression. no matter the technical truth is, it is fascinating to see the colour images of an era that we never thought existed. it gives a literal sense of perception, and more emotion about the subject matter.
regards
i.

This technique was developed 1903 by the brothers Lumière. The plates were coated with red, green and blue potato starch. The images had a long exposure time, but the quality was not bad, as you might notice. If you look at them closely, the images look like they were printed with an inkjet printer (lots of little dots).

Oh no, our secret sources are discovered! We wanted to include the "Gott strafe England!" painting (God punish England!), but at that time the british weren't included yet. Maybe we will change that with MR2.

World War 1 had no mans land and painting a picture (the target) of the huns.
It is a stretch but you dont need to just randomly accuse meadow.

Or, I'm quoting the late Cpt. E. Blackadder.
