I know the WWI Imperial German Army, and IIRC the French, Belgians, etc…, had the practice of putting the units' regimental numbers on the front of their caps; in the case of German forces, they were sewn on the front of their canvas pickelhaube covers, at first in red, then later in green, then the practice was eventually done away with altogether…
I have been searching on the Internet very hard through search engines, but am coming up short on this; can anyone tell me either where to get this info, or if you can, please answer these questions:
1) When did the Germans:
a) switch from red to green numbers, and then:
b) when did they do away with the practice?
2) Before finding out first(I know – silly me!), I've painted my HaT 20mm Early Imperial Germans' pickelhaubes with the earlier red numbers;
a) which units (IE: regimental numbers) saw service going to war with the old red numbers? and;
b) I've picked the number "101" for my painted soldiers' regiment(easy number to paint such small numbers); which regiment was that, Prussian, Saxon, Baden, Wurttemberg, Bavarian, etc…?
c) where did they see service, and;
d) whom did they fight against, (IE: specifically which enemy regiments did they oppose?)
3) Where can I find out specific regimental numbers and histories/OOB's/TOE's for most or all WWI combatants?
Thanks tremendously; any help is immensely appreciated!!!
